Holiday Snaps: A Magical Halloween

An annual tradition here at Siskoid's Blog of Geekery, here are geek-relevant costumes from my gang's thematic Halloween party. The theme: Magic. Of course there are different kinds of magic and magic-users, so let's subdivide this one...

Divination
Fortune telling is one of the last bastions of magic in the modern world. I decided to go as your typical turbaned swami type, and read Tarot cards all night, which yes, is an ability I possess. It fits here because I always use the Vertigo Tarot designed by Rachel Pollack and Dave McKean.
Also in this category are Randy and Chloé, who accidentally both came as Magic 8 Balls. Randy thought he was being so clever too (though he did have an envelope filled with random answers for people to choose from, that was neat). I later saw Chloé's pictures at another party where she was part of a pool-related group costume with other balls. That's some pretty efficient repurposing.

Witches
oHOTmu or NOT's Isabel is calling the Guardians of the Watchtower and about to be struck by lightning as Fairuza Balk's teenage witch Nancy Downs in The Craft!
Going back some decades, downstairs neighbor Andréanne was impressive as the Wicked Witch of the West. And here's her roommate Cassidy as Dorothy:
There was a whole group doing The Wizard of Oz, with a Lion, a Tin Man and a Scarecrow running around, I just didn't get to take a group picture, is all.

Other types of magicians
Stage magic was represented in Marc, who could actually pull a few tricks, which we didn't think was in his skill set.
Berry was a necromancer, but I'm not sure if he actually raised the dead that night.

TV, Movies and Comics
oHOTmu or Not's Amelie et her beau, Mr. Luc, are Gomez and Morticia Addams, who certainly live in a magical world.
OHOTmu's DJ Nath argued her portrayal of Josie (of Pussycat fame) was also from a magical world - after all, didn't Sabrina go to the same school? (There were also some magical shenanigans featuring Sebastian the cat.) It works! It's fine!
On the anime side, oHOTmu's Shotgun plays Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle, and got her hair white for just that purpose. (Well, not just for that purpose, she'd been talking about it for a while.)
And we end with our cosplay queen Art-Girl who put hammer and saw to work to transform herself into Star Butterfly from the animated series Star vs. the Forces of Evil. Magical princess from the dimension of Mewni who, on her 14th birthday, receives the family heirloom wand. After she accidentally sets fire to her castle, her parents decide that a safer option is to send her to Earth as a foreign exchange student. She befriends Marco Diaz and lives with his family while attending Echo Creek Academy. Star and Marco must deal with everyday school life while protecting Star's wand from falling into the hands of Ludo, a villain from Mewni who commands an army of monsters. Star and the folks from Mewni are able to travel across dimensions using "dimensional scissors" that can open portals. There. Now you know about as much as I do.

Hope you enjoyed this sampling of geek wear, and have a spooky Halloween!
